Slime is more than just a fun activity—it’s a powerful tool in play therapy. It engages the senses, promotes emotional regulation, and encourages self-expression in a safe and natural way for children.

At SPT, we’re always refining our sensory shelf to balance creative freedom and the containment needed to preserve the therapeutic essence of play. When children approach the sensory shelf, they have the freedom to choose various materials to mix together, engaging in a process that mirrors life’s uncertainties. This cause-and-effect exploration allows them to practice tolerating the unknown, manage anxiety, develop coping skills, and stay present through mindful play.
How We Structure Sensory Play
- Each child gathers their chosen sensory materials on a tray, along with a compostable bowl and spoon—making cleanup easier and ensuring the focus remains on the experience.
- In the playroom, therapists balance freedom and structure, helping both the child and therapist stay within their window of tolerance.
- We often observe the difference in texture preferences, which naturally fosters mindfulness.
- Some children prefer smooth, stretchy slime, while others enjoy grainy or fluffy textures. Noticing and naming these preferences helps children build self-awareness and recognize the perspectives of others, social awareness, and reciprocity.
- Throughout the process, we emphasize expressive freedom and control, reinforcing a child’s sense of mastery and self-esteem.
- Sometimes, the final product isn’t what they expected or wanted, but that, too, is part of the therapeutic journey and builds psychological flexibility.
- We celebrate the process rather than just the outcome, reinforcing the idea that growth happens through exploration and persistence.

Support Our Sensory Shelf!
Slime play fosters creativity, sensory processing, and social interaction in both individual and group therapy settings, providing a safe, nonverbal outlet for emotions. However, maintaining our slime corner requires time, thought, and ongoing resources.
If you’d like to support this valuable therapeutic tool, consider donating to our sensory items fund or bringing in slime materials! Every contribution helps us keep this meaningful experience available for all the children we serve.
Donations are accepted and appreciated but never expected or required.
