This presentation and discussion are specifically focused on play therapy perspectives and interventions for children affected by a loved one’s cancer. Attendees will broaden their clinical understanding of how cancer affects their clients’ emotional lives and play. We will discuss the appropriate play therapy approach for different aspects of the cancer journey, from diagnosis to treatment, to ‘watch and wait’, to survivorship. Relevant case study, professional insight, and research findings will supply real-world tools to enhance your play therapy practice.

Cancer touches every play therapist eventually. Even if oncology or illness is not our clinical focus, the children we work with will be affected by cancer in their family, school, or social circle. While every cancer experience is unique, there are common themes and psychosocial impacts that should inform our play therapy practice.

Workshop Objectives:
After the training, participants will be able to:
1. List the psychosocial impacts of the cancer experience, influenced by the developmental level and cultural lens
2. Identify common play themes and special considerations for play therapy interventions
3. Demonstrate appropriate and culturally sensitive ways to structure family involvement in play therapy interventions
4. Utilize cancer-specific resources and learning opportunities for play therapists’ continued professional growth in this area
