Play Therapy with Trans Youth — Sep 12, 2025

Trans and non-binary youth face unique challenges and deserve knowledgeable Play Therapy providers and welcoming therapeutic spaces that can affirm and empower them to be who they are. Dr. Kade Sharp, LICSW, Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor, CMHS, is a trans clinician and he will provide specific Play Therapy interventions to use with trans youth, discuss playful ways to increase their gender euphoria and decrease gender dysphoria, and share about transgender culture and its implications in clinical practice.

Learning Objectives: 

  • Analyze basic terminology and concepts pertinent to Gender Dysphoria and trans youth that attend Play Therapy sessions
  • Examine the history of gender and Gender Dysphoria with a critical focus on cultural implications and ethical approaches for treating trans youth in Play Therapy
  • Explain the psychological benefits and implications of using Play Therapy with trans youth
  • Demonstrate 7 different Play Therapy activities designed to be culturally competent and relevant to trans youth and their families

Dr. Kade Sharp (he/they) is an autistic trans LICSW, Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor, and Child Mental Health Specialist with a PhD in Clinical Sexology. He sees therapy clients, supervises Associate-level clinicians, and provides case consultation for colleagues. Kade has a clinical focus on working with autistic, queer, and trans folks.
