In these times of uncertainty, it can feel overwhelming— significant life changes, unexpected challenges, or simply the uncertainty of the unknown future. At Seattle Play Therapy, we believe that safety starts from within. Here are some things to keep in mind when navigating uncertainty from the inside out:
When things feel out of control, focus on what is within reach.
Practicing small habits that you have control of in your everyday life can help increase your confidence & anxiety.
Practices that help ease anxiety and decrease stress:
Acknowledge Feelings – Feeling unsure, anxious, or even scared is okay. Naming emotions helps us process them.
Create Routines – Consistency can bring comfort. Small, predictable moments—like a favorite bedtime story or a daily check-in—help create a sense of stability.
Ground Yourself – When things feel out of control, focus on what is within reach. Deep breaths, mindfulness exercises, or even a favorite song can provide an anchor.
Reach out for Support – You don’t have to navigate uncertainty alone. Connection, whether through therapy, family, or community, helps us feel seen and supported.
Comfort Items – A favorite stuffed animal, weighted blanket, or fidget toy can be a grounding tool in uncertain moments.
Check-Ins – Setting aside a time each day to talk about highs and lows encourages emotional processing and connection.
The Importance of Creating a Safe Community
Safety isn’t just an individual experience; we build it together. A strong, supportive community can provide comfort, reassurance, and honest, productive conversation in uncertain times.
How to Create a Safe Community – Welcoming, open, honest conversation, emotional support and encouraging connection and trust can help build a safe and reliable community.
The Power of Resilience
Resilience reminds us that growth is possible even in the face of challenge. It’s not about being unaffected by stress or change—it’s about finding ways to move through it with support, self-awareness, and strength.
Building resilience starts from within, but it grows stronger with community. When we offer children the tools to understand their emotions, connect to others, and trust in their own capabilities, we help them build the foundation for long-term well-being.
Book Spotlight
We have shared a few books highlighting the importance and power of resilience during these times of uncertainty and potential distress.
“Maybe: A Story About the Endless Potential in All of Us” by Kobi Yamada
Maybe is a beautifully illustrated, uplifting picture book that explores the limitless potential within every child. Gentle, poetic language encourages children to believe in themselves, embrace their uniqueness, and follow their dreams—no matter how big or uncertain they seem. The story is a heartfelt reminder that everyone has a purpose and something wonderfully unique to offer the world, even if they don’t know what it is yet.
“The Hugging Tree: A Story About Resilience” by Jill Neinmark
The Hugging Tree by Jill Neimark is a heartwarming story about a little tree growing alone on a cliff, facing harsh winds and storms. Despite the challenges, the tree stands firm with the help of kindness and support from others. This beautifully illustrated book teaches children about resilience, hope, and the power of community in helping us grow through adversity.

Feeling Uncertain is Normal!
It’s important to remind ourselves- and our children- that uncertainty is a natural and inevitable part of life. Feeling uncertain doesn’t mean we’re lost; we’re learning, growing, and adapting. Focusing on what we can control and leaning into support can create a sense of safety from the inside out.
At Seattle Play Therapy, we are here to support children and families in navigating life’s uncertainties with understanding, care, and affirming practices. Find help through our Parent Support & Coaching.
